Mary (Betty) Bigney
Betty has been teaching for 31 years in the DuBois Area School System. She has taught every grade level from Kindergarten to graduate level courses and is currently teaching middle school and high school gifted students. Betty teaches units dealing with robotics, photography, computers, and laser technology. As a child she remembers lying in the cool autumn grass waiting to catch a glimpse of Sputnik. She held her breath as man took the first steps on the moon and cried with the nation for the crews of Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia. She presented workshops at the national and world Young Astronaut Conferences and worked as an educational consultant for NAIC (a division of NASA at the University of Pittsburgh). She runs a space camp every summer in Oil City and Western PA Young Astronaut Conference the first weekend in May in DuBois. Betty enjoys working with children of any age and has presented workshops to elementary, middle school, and high school students as well as adults and teachers. She has been recognized as a finalist for the PA Teacher of the Year and one of the top 20 teachers in the nation by USA Today. Betty loves talking to students and adults about space and future space flight.
